The Real Threat to UK Food Security: It’s Not Just Biodiversity Loss

When the UK Government warns that global biodiversity loss threatens our food supply, it misses a deeper, more immediate danger: our food system is already on the brink. Despite official reassurances that the UK imports only 40% of its food, the reality is far starker – if borders closed tomorrow, just 11% of food would be immediately available for the population. This vulnerability isn’t just about future ecosystem collapse; it’s the result of decades of policy choices that prioritised global supply chains and corporate control over local resilience. To truly secure our food future, we must rebuild local, traditional, and regenerative farming, treat food as a public good, and adopt community-based governance models like LEGS. The real national security threat is here – and it’s time for urgent, systemic change.
