The Time for Performance is Over

The time for performance is over. The music has stopped, and the old system no longer has a chair.

For decades, British politics has carried on as if the stage were still set in the old way – leaders stepping forward, delivering their lines, and reassuring us that the familiar rhythms still apply. But the stage has changed, and the machinery behind it has changed too.

This essay looks at what happens when a country keeps performing long after the script has lost its meaning – when capable people are trapped inside a system that no longer connects action to outcome. It’s not a story of villains or fools, but of a design that has reached its limits.

The performance is over. What comes next depends on whether we keep reciting the old lines, or finally face the silence and begin building a system that fits the world as it is.
