Yes, Farage, Dolan and many other ‘names’ could play a part in what comes next. But their ideas, their passion and their anger only cover parts of what the comprehensive change we need is all about

August 19, 2020 1 comment

To date I have made a conscious decision not to get involved in the threads or ongoing arguments on social media. I didn’t do it as a Councillor. I didn’t do it over Brexit. I’m not doing it with my feelings about the Lockdown, Social Distancing or the growing list of things that this Government has screwed up either.

The problem is that in the greater part, the debate, movement for change or whatever you wish to label it is transitory at best within this media ravaged age.

As we face the considerable challenges that this rancid political class have created for us, we need a movement and political vehicle that connects with the masses on a visceral level. Not just something in vogue that leads only to a ‘protest vote’ that doesn’t really dictate anything than a direction for the existing political classes, rather than establishing the change that we now need.

By protest vote, I am of course talking about Brexit, the Brexit Party, UKIP and the Anti Federalist League that led to its creation before that. Not because Leaving the EU wasn’t just or the right thing to do (I have no doubt that it was). But because for many of those people who dared to say NO to the establishment on a June day in 2016, the whole process was a safe opportunity to tell our political classes that their behaviour simply wasn’t right.

No matter what you say or how you present the detail of what is happening around all of us right now, people will only see what the Government and these politicians are doing and what they have done through the lens of their own experiences.

Yes, they will vote for something different if it makes sense in relationship to their life experience to do so. But that vote will be as far as the commitment goes unless a direction or way of doing things becomes safe or something that is encouraged to shout in public about.

Agreeing with something is a lot different to being that thing and living it. That is why the votes that worked for Vote Leave in the Referendum and the Brexit and UKIP parties in EU Elections simply evaporated when it came to making choices about the everyday things that really matter to people when a General Election came around.

It all worked out well for Boris in December because he managed to distance himself from the deliberate choice of the Establishment to attempt to overturn the will of the people over three years of Parliamentary intransigence.

The 2019 General Election was a comparative rarity in contemporary British politics. People from all sides have came together to show they were collectively miffed about something and supported an established political party whether they would normally support them or not. Boris and this political class will not have that opportunity again.

Whilst many are accusing others of being asleep to what the Johnson Government is doing and has done, very few are awake to the reality that the activism that is growing against the Establishment and the choices that have been made by the Johnson Government are in danger of becoming just like another Brexit-type situation all over again.

We simply have too much to lose if all this new surge in activism succeeds in doing is convincing this Political Class to change direction – and they in turn then continue to change that direction behind closed doors in the ways that they then decide work best for them.

This is what happened before and what will inevitably happen again if WE do not get it right this time.

Right now, Nigel Farage is doing an epic job of shining a light on the issue of illegal immigration via the Channel from France. He was a pivotal player in the Brexit campaign and should have been sent to The Lords at the very least for his efforts by either May or Johnson by now – especially as the current Conservative Regime has now elevated people like Claire Fox who was on the same ticket and arguably did much less of the same thing.

Meanwhile, Simon Dolan is a new player to the whole political game and has made a name for himself by launching a legal bid to overturn the Lockdown in Court which he crowdfunded. Yes, he has launched #KBF or Keep Britain Free which on the face of it is seeking to become the recognised movement for change. But the libertarian strapline underpinning the wheels of this vehicle shine a light on the reality that the Brexit movement and #KBF are running the same kind of machine. One that is promoting a certain set of ideas that answer the immediate questions coming to people’s minds, but don’t do anything to demonstrate any understanding of the significantly wider issues that have led to this situation, or what their leadership would do if it were to run candidates and find itself with power after a democratic election – IF that is how the Johnson Government falls when this whole sorry saga comes to an end.

Both Farage and Dolan share passion for the delivery of the change that they personally see to be right. But that in itself is far from being enough.

We have had decades of politicians running on their own agendas with no understanding of the depth or breadth of the problems that the whole of society faces and why those problems exist.

Make no mistake, this is a level of understanding that is necessary before any attempt can be made to look with a comprehensive and discerning approach to what will and will not work as we go forward, or places any political movement as being able to lead others who do.

Facing the task of rectifying this mess is not as simple as saying ‘we are going to have a libertarian constitution’ and then expecting it will immediately be so simply because you have the majority in Parliament.

Ironically, Boris Johnsons string-puller-in-chief Dominic Cummings was correct in his view of the need for wholesale reform in Westminster. The problem with his approach is the same as would be experienced by Farage, Dolan, the anticipated ‘Reform Party’ or #KBF: You will not fix a problem and stop it from recurring if you cannot see how the processes of government and the public sector from the very top to the bottom and back up again works. You must have an appropriate level of respect for that before you kick off the process of change.

We simply have too much to lose as a Country, as communities, as people, as individuals by failing to get right what comes after this Government.

The reason that so much doesn’t make sense to people as they see everything unfolding in the media, is that there is much bigger picture at work. Not a conspiracy. Not a new world order or anything else that all too easily explains the gap that most of us have in our view of a very complex situation.

If we all continue to face this whole situation by dealing only with that we can see and not making allowances for that which we cannot, we are destined to have stupid politicians like Johnson, Sunak, Williamson and the rest in charge of our destiny forever and a day. Because we will never get around to fixing the problems with a system that will continue to put people just like them in power – whether they are Conservatives, Labour or anything else they want to call themselves – just the same as the Brexit Party, Reform Party or Keep Britain Free would be if they were in Government now without having changed their approach significantly to what they do.

#KBF & Simon Dolan RIGHTLY get the Lockdown case Appealed. But what difference would a win in Court really make?

Many people from the anti-Lockdown movement will be celebrating today at the news that Simon Dolan and Keep Britain Free have succeeded in winning an Appeal Hearing after the initial effort to get the Lockdown legally overturned failed.

With so much harm having already come to jobs, businesses and the economy, and with culture-changing social distancing measures restricting our routines and daily life at every turn, there is of course much to celebrate in the Case being heard. I am certainly not going to criticise a collective effort that in principle I agree with, especially when we are all very much together in the belief that people are unnecessarily being restricted and hurt by what Johnson and Co have done.

The question is however, what difference would a win in Court really make?

As I suggested in my first Blog about the Case that was then being assembled and the Crowdfunder that had been promoted to get financial support, simply fighting in Court over principles with an Establishment that doesn’t have any is not a process that will result in a genuine win.

Any victory in Court would have been pyric even if the Lockdown had been stopped when the Case was heard in Court before. Because the action itself would not remove either the Government or the existing pool of stupid politicians that we have. That is of course before you consider the irreparable harm that the Lockdown has now done to lives, jobs, businesses and incalculably more.

The problems that are stacking up for us all reach way beyond the loss of jobs, the closure of businesses, the requirement to wear masks, the closure of schools and all the hidden impacts like suicides and significant rises in abuse, depression and anxiety that hardly touches the mainstream news.

Whether we all understand and accept it or not as yet, the solution to these problems will not come from any political movement that operates in an echo chamber like the Brexit Party did in a single-issue form.

The politicians that we have and their whole political class  – and to be clear that’s pretty much all of them – have been wrecking lives, creating division, unfairness and trauma where there was never any need for it to exist long before Coronavirus or Covid-19 came into view.

Any of us attempting to tackle the political problem without a full appreciation of what has happened, is still happening and how politics and government genuinely works in this Country is destined to prop up the existing political party regimes or repeat the same mistakes dressed up differently all over again.

I admire the effort that Simon has made. There is little doubt that his principles are very much in the right place. But the belief that all this can be resolved and a constitution enshrining basic human rights based on Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness can be delivered simply by winning enough votes to influence the politicians that we have is likely to prove very misguided indeed.

As with the European Referendum result before this crisis and then the 2019 European Parliament Elections that followed, Simon may well be right in that a direction of travel can be established through influence alone.

The problem with having stupid politicians in charge however, is it unquestionably the devil in the detail that counts. Just as we have seen with Boris (out of general view during this Crisis) and of course more openly with Trident Tongued Theresa May before.

Sorting this mess out is not a job for normal people.

It is not a job for the normal politicians that we cannot seem to rid ourselves of either.

This is a lot more than simply being about background, experience, qualification, motivation and ideas to make the effort and belief really count.

This is going to need 650 people with a very different, potentially enlightened way of looking at the world, at everything happening, with vision to see and understand the consequences of public policy on everyone, if we are to have a government that delivers results that are genuinely good for and consider us all.

Being in Government at any level is in no way as simple as telling other people what to do. Yes, the systems and the procedures need to be changed, just as the culture of the public sector has to be transformed all the way through.

But to do this and to make it count, there is no option but to take as many people within the system with you as possible and only remove those who will obstruct the change necessary because their current roles give them enough clout.

There has to be a working appreciation of how government already works by anyone in a position of power who wants to change it permanently before that change can begin.

To all of us outside of Westminster who want that change to have begun yesterday, this means putting together a new movement that reaches way beyond the idealistic and attempting to convince and justify to others what should automatically be seen as right.

I wish Simon and KBF well with the Appeal and sincerely hope that they win the Case. It is clearly justified and right.

But as we go forward and more and more of us start to experience the fallout from what these stupid politicians have done and as our freedoms and rights to speak out are infringed ever more, I hope that those who have awoken to what this Government has done will also realise that fighting the Lockdown and the Social Distancing measures being used to cage and restrict us are just battles that are part of a much bigger war.

Winning this for us all is about a lot more than changing opinion, knowing you are right or simple good luck.

Please take a step back. Take a deep breath. Be patient and take the time necessary. Then do the job right.

Conspiracy theories will help the Government, not the anti-lockdown cause

img_8150Providing you don’t buy into any of the propaganda, social media feeds offer a valuable gauge and indicator of what is generally going on and what the different camps are thinking about everything.

Scanning across the top of the echo chambers and ecosystems that political parties, activists, academics, commentators and the mainstream media inhabit can provide a very useful and interesting insight of how real people feel along with the contrary view of what the establishment wants us all to believe is going on.

Right now, there are a lot of people losing their shit within the anti-lockdown contingent, particularly those who are supporting #KBF or Keep Britain Free. (KBF was the brainchild of businessman Simon Dolan who crowd-funded the legal action against the Government over the Lockdown that was subsequently lost).

With each and every measure that the Johnson Government shoehorns into our lives feeling more restrictive and more out of touch than the last, the frustration of anti-lockdown supporters grows with their disbelief and frustration that neither the government nor mainstream media thinking is falling in line with what they see as being a very logical and right cause.

The problem for any new movement that doesn’t understand or respect the political terrain it faces is stupid politicians are pig headed in the extreme.

Whilst Boris & Co just keep on moving in a direction that is destroying this Country with everything they do, the open discussion and accusations of there being a conspiracy driving policy direction only serves to make the Government look measured and sensible. Meanwhile those lining up against them look increasingly like they should only ever be the subject of a damn good laugh.

Culturally, the majority of people in this country will not blink in their support for the Government until what Johnson & Co have done leaves them burned at a personal level. This is increasingly likely to happen in the coming weeks and months.

The monster that the Lockdown released hasn’t even come into full view yet. It is only when the reality of the chaos that the Government has unleashed hits everyone that the change that increasing numbers of us know has to happen with the way that politics operates in the UK will have the opportunity to work.

Bang your head against a brick wall enough times and you are certain to go dizzy. This is what is happening right now with a great many otherwise sensible people.

The futile effort that they are investing in ideas such as Covid and the Lockdown being part of a deliberate strategy are becoming counterproductive towards the creation and development of the new movement that would genuinely be able to sweep aside the usual suspects and dangerous activist groups when the Johnson Government falls and then step into the void and do something very good.

Nothing the Johnson Government is doing is either fair or right. But this is not the time to have a shouting competition about who is wrong and who is right. This is the moment for everyone awakening to the injustice that is at work to take a deep breathe and step back. Because pleading for what should be happening isn’t the way to change things so that what is happening is at it should be.

As it stands, the talk of conspiracy theories is making Johnson look credible when his actions would otherwise be speaking very clearly to us all

Don’t waste money challenging the Lockdown in Court. Fund a people’s movement for change instead

May 22, 2020 1 comment

It sounds like I’m about to critiscise Simon Dolan for his High Court Action against The Lockdown and the Crowdfunding Campaign he has been championing to find it.

I’m not.

But I can’t support it either.

Not because I don’t agree with the principle of what he is doing.

I do.

I won’t actively support it because the objective itself is a waste of his time and that of his legal team.

The money would be better spent funding a new people’s movement for change. One we will need very soon, when the reality of what the unnecessary Lockdown has done hits home and the UK wakes up to the need for real leadership to get us out of the mess that Boris and his Government created, putting right all that they have done wrong.

One of the most difficult and challenging things that I ever had to do as a Borough Councillor was to explain to consitituents who had valid, justified and correct arguments against the actions of politicians and Government that they would be able to say their piece, but the system would ensure that they wouldn’t be heard if it went against the direction of political travel that day.

It is no different now and the money that Mr Dolan has attracted from many people from across our great country who realise the Lockdown and attack on our liberty was not necessary and has done far more damage than it was ever worth, fills me with hope that we can change the way things work for the better – as long as we play the right game.

The flow of this broken establishment system goes only one way. You can only win by fixing the whole broken thing (which means changing all of it) or by taking action that compliments it and goes exactly the same way.

The Court Action does neither. No matter what exchanges take place, what is reported in the media or how the Government might appear to be criticised in some way, the justification for this argument will not stop the Government from doing what it is doing and will not get a result.

What we all need, more than futile gestures – no matter how well intended they might be – is for people who have something to say and have the ability to get public attention to say it, to make the argument for the need for change and give it real voice.

When the wheels fall off for the Johnson Government as you can be sure they are going to very soon, we do not need a situation where we only have Keir Starmer or whoever is leading the Liberal Democrat’s as the choice.

We will need options that will work for us all. Those options will not come from any of the existing parties, even if words like reform are involved.

Putting right the damage that this Government has done and making the very best use of the opportunities for bottom to top change that will come to improve the lives of everyone in this Nation post COVID-19 requires that we have new blood, new faces and above all new thinking at the top.

Working against the tide of this establishment isn’t easy as the fear they have installed within so many of Coronavirus has shown.

Money, passion and the support of real people like that given to Mr Dolan will be the catalyst for change that this Country will need and the money being spent challenging the Lockdown in Court would be better spent funding a people’s movement for change.

Suing the Government over the Lockdown won’t solve the problems and end the crisis they have created for us all

Lone voices shout against the crowd, trying to stop everyone walking onto the beach to see the spectacle of a disappearing sea before the overwhelming horror and force of the tsunami returns, overwhelms and destroys everything whilst it kills or injures people indiscriminately and at will.

No, this is not the tragedy and disaster of Boxing Day 2004 in the Indian Ocean. This is what we are experiencing and living through right now. Albeit within what feels like a parallel universe where it has become necessary to attempt communication in metaphorical terms because it has become too difficult to communicate with people who have been taken in by the Government narrative in any other way.

You will either get it or you won’t. But just because you don’t get it doesn’t make it untrue.

Those that do understand the crisis that the UK is facing and has faced from the moment that the Lockdown began and are prepared to speak or act publicly even now, some 6 weeks in, remain very few in number. But that isn’t to say that a great many more don’t agree at least in part with what is being said.

Yes, the momentum appears to be completely behind the Government.

So successful has their media campaign been based on propaganda and the misuse of behavioural insights, that terms such as ‘social distancing’, ‘stay at home, save lives’ and ‘protect the NHS’ have turned the general population into a zombie nation . One that has become progressively more fearful of catching this virus since the COVID-19 Pandemic began.

Not only has the Government imposed an unnecessary and dubious Lockdown with physical distancing measures that has seen social distancing becoming common parlance and accepted terminology for the 2020 police state in the UK. They have failed spectacularly to mitigate and insulate our businesses and jobs against the fallout from their mistake. They are now consolidating the problems they have caused and are in the process of causing by doubling down on the steps they have already taken, using lie after lie in the form of hollow advice and directives to give credibility to the giant ones they issued to coerce the British Public to accept the Lockdown in the first place.

Of those speakers and lone voices I have already talked about, names such as Peter Hitchens who writes for The Mail on Sunday and Laura Perrins who is co-editor of the website Conservative Woman have consistently questioned the actions or motives of the Government over recent weeks, often receiving much vitriol and scorn from the usual suspects on platforms such as Twitter in response.

Such commentary appearing on my own Facebook feed via a friend who was commenting yesterday drew my attention to the Court Action and related crowd-funding request that is being initiated by businessman Simon Dolan.

Mr Dolan has instructed Solicitors Wedlake Bell and Barrister Francis Hoar to begin proceedings to sue the Government over the imposition of the Lockdown and already drawn much derision for doing so.

Having seen it suggested by the twitterati that Ms Perrins was experiencing a mental breakdown when she Tweeted that (as an experienced barrister herself) she might well initiate proceedings against the Government in the future on a similar if not the same basis, its not difficult to picture how the court of public opinion is feeling about anything that goes against the official narrative that still remains in place – no matter how wrong or how damaging it is or will soon turn out to be.

The difficulty for Mr Dolan, Laura Perrins or anyone else who wants to tackle the ineptitude and ignorance of the politicians our system tells us we must call a government, is that the tide of groupthink that is carrying the establishment will continue to convince everyone who is travelling with it that both the Government and they are right until the very moment of impact when it is too late to head off the disaster that is now destined to come.

Suing the Government and its abuse of its responsibilities and powers to impose the Lockdown upon us all is certainly justified.

But when you are dealing with a Government and an establishment that is drunk on its own power and obsessed with the sound of its own voice, doing the right thing and in this case attempting to use the very legal system against it that we know it controls is not going to achieve the result that those of us who are awake already want, even though it is precisely what all of us – including those who are currently blind the realities of the Government’s actions – so desperately need.

Every day that this Lockdown and any form of the complete injustice that is ‘social distancing’ continues will be another day too many that has added damage to real lives, our economy and our Country.

It was avoidable at the start, but has for many already become irreparable harm.

The false populism that the Government created with the Media’s help has ensured that too many people believe everything they say. The same people will regrettably not see it differently until the tsunami hits them personally.

In the same way, the majority of us will not hear the alternative message, reality and truth – that opposes the one the Government is foolishly doing everything that it can to reinforce and to repeat – until the physical impact of that message has actually arrived in our lives.

Using the Courts to tackle a Government that is failing in its job whilst legitimising stupidity is neither playing the same game, nor playing by the same rules.

Court action will regrettably fail in delivering any beneficial purpose – even if the action wins, simply because it will come too late to turn that tide. It will only succeed in making an already inept Government lie to us again and say they will do things differently if the same thing were to happen again. It will not change the people we have in power nor the way that they think in any way.

With the Lockdown now having been running for 6 weeks already, the options for anyone who arrives in power to clean up the mess that the Johnson Government has created are becoming fewer and harder by the day.

Domestic abuse, suicides, evictions, debt, job losses, unemployment, abuse, safeguarding issues, divorces, anxiety, depression, long-term mental health issues, deaths, reduced standards of living, poverty, hunger and much more besides are already inevitable. They will not be changed or headed off in ways that they could have been if we had good politicians and a responsible Government from the start – One that would not have opted for the Lockdown as the route out of the COVID emergency in the first place.

To limit the pain from the problems the Johnson Government and the political culture they are part of has created, we need different leadership right now.

Democracy will not solve the crisis. Democracy cannot repair the damage that has already been done. Democracy will not put the UK back together and rediscover our place in the World once the fight against Covid is won. Because democracy in this Country has become a lie.

We need a government that will literally impose all the changes and direction across all areas of public policy that will be in the best interests of all, rather than trying to court public opinion and that of a media that will only appreciate the steps that have genuinely been taken in the best interests of all once we have weathered the storm. That can only come when everything has been fixed and the changes made have had adequate time to run their course.

The regrettable reality is that it is too late for this Government and the Politicians that we have to get any of this right. They are not wired the right way. We need people taking the lead who will weather this storm for us and on our behalf who really are ‘in the same room’.

Whilst we should wish Mr Dolan and his legal team all the very best with what they plan to do, the reality is that we will need the money that we have and our time and our support will be better spent placing focus and effort elsewhere.

We will only see the end of this narcissistic Government and stop the process of damage and harm this political culture is doing to us all once they are removed from power. They and the kind they represent must never given the opportunity to return to pay lip service to responsibility in the way that they are doing now.

Rioting, violence and public unrest will serve no purpose in the fight for our freedom and justice for all.

That doesn’t mean we have to continue to maintain our consent for the politicians we have to continue to lead.

We have to recognise and then break the herd mentality that we have all unwittingly become part of that has given legitimacy to the Lockdown and everything wrong with what the Government has done and will continue to do.

Their words mean nothing. They have no value to us all.

It is only by embracing herd immunity and the process that it will take to get us there that we can together again become strong.

So when you see local businesses reopening in whatever form the might choose, or see people out and about walking or in their cars in whatever way or at whatever time of the day they choose, support them. Applaud them. Encourage them to do more. Even if you are not yet ready to do it yourself.

The only way that we can be rid of this Lockdown, the police state known as social distancing and begin to turn all the problems in the UK around, is to ignore the politicians who no longer have legitimacy in power to lead us and ignore all of the ridiculous messages, actions and rules that this out-of-touch establishment continues to impose.

We need leadership that respects the realities of public consent rather than abusing it to extend their own purposes and selfish cause.

There was a time when it didn’t feel like it really mattered who was in charge because everything would always stay the same.

Now we know different.

We must withdraw our consent for politicians, who through a process of self-gratification, are masquerading as our leaders whilst getting way with treating us all like fools.

Let’s focus all our energies on doing what needs to be done to limit the damage before the tsunami that has swallowed the sea that is the Covid emergency returns.
